Be Smart with Your Smartphone: Protect yourself and your phone
Do you love your smartphone? Are you crazy about your iPad? You’re not alone. Thieves are eyeing them too--targeting users of high-tech mobile devices and catching them at unexpected moments of vulnerability while they’re at cafes, on public transit, or even walking down the street. This alarming trend is growing nationwide, but tech-savvy Californians may be particularly vulnerable.
Stolen devices are usually sold for hundreds of dollars, in hand-to-hand transactions or even overseas. AT&T takes this seriously and we’re collaborating with the FCC and other major wireless providers around the world to help block the use of stolen wireless devices. There are important steps you can take to protect yourself, minimize the risk of theft and safeguard your personal information:
- If you need to use your phone in public, use headphones or a Bluetooth headset so you can keep your phone in your purse or pocket.
- When dining out, especially if you’re sitting at an outside table, never leave your phone out and within easy reach of passersby.
- Don’t text and walk, and keep eye contact with those around you.
- When on public transit, be aware of opening and closing doors; they make for quick getaways for thieves.
- Add a PIN or security password to your phone or wireless device.
- Back up your phone/device regularly.
- Learn how to back up your SIM card contacts.
- Download and enable services and applications that can track a stolen phone via GPS.
- Change your online and voicemail passwords every few months.
- Download device protection and privacy apps for your smartphone and consider purchasing supplemental insurance.
What can an AT&T customer do if your phone is lost or stolen?
- Suspend your AT&T wireless service at www.att.com/OLAM; an AT&T store, or by dialing 1-800-331-0500 to avoid unauthorized usage charges.
- AT&T will accept stolen device reports and block them from use on our network within 24 hours.
- Report your stolen phone to the police.
